Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Friday

Your Timor-Leste adventure begins the moment you board your morning Airnorth flight from Darwin. In little more than an hour, you'll touch down in vibrant Dili, where your local guide from Manny Timor Tours will be waiting to give you a warm Timorese welcome and introduce you to this fascinating young nation.

After clearing customs, start your journey with breakfast before taking on one of Dili's most iconic experiences – the climb to Cristo Rei. Those who make the ascent will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the sparkling coastline, the city of Dili, and the rugged mountains beyond.

The adventure continues with an immersive introduction to Timor-Leste's rich history and culture. Explore some of the capital's most significant landmarks, including the colourful Tais Market, the moving Santa Cruz Cemetery, and the Resistance Museum, where you'll gain a deeper understanding of the country's remarkable journey to independence.

Following your city tour, you'll be transferred to your hotel to check in and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. Take the opportunity to soak up Dili's relaxed atmosphere, wander along the waterfront, or pick up a few snacks and essentials for your upcoming island escape to Atauro Island.

Day 2: Saturday

After an early breakfast, you'll be transferred to the ferry terminal for your journey across to Atauro Island. The ferry ride to Barry's Place takes approximately two hours, offering beautiful ocean views along the way, so be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and perhaps a good book for the journey.

Over the next two days, settle into the laid-back island lifestyle at Barry's Place. Spend your days swaying in a hammock overlooking the sea, taking leisurely walks along the expansive beach, snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters, or exploring the nearby local villages and connecting with the welcoming island communities.

All meals are included during your stay at Barry's Place, showcasing fresh local flavours. If you have any dietary requirements, be sure to advise these in advance to ensure they can be catered for.

Day 3: Sunday

This is your day to do whatever you want! Beloi is the perfect place to slow down and embrace island life. Spend your time snorkelling or diving in the crystal-clear waters that surround Atauro Island, relaxing on the beach, wandering through the local village, or joining a guided walk to learn more about the island's culture and way of life. For those seeking adventure, boat trips and hikes to nearby viewpoints offer unforgettable experiences and spectacular scenery.

Day 4: Monday

After a final breakfast in paradise, board your scenic MAF flight back to Dili, taking in one last sweeping view of the islands below.

From there, journey to Balibo, stopping at significant landmarks along the way that offer insight into Timor-Leste’s history and culture, before arriving in this peaceful highland village.

Once in Balibo, explore the area’s powerful history through its two museums, where stories of resilience and community come to life. Spend time engaging with local villagers and experiencing their warm hospitality, before unwinding at the Balibo Fort Hotel, where sweeping treetop views provide the perfect backdrop to reflect on your journey.

Day 5: Tuesday

Have a bit of a sleep in and enjoy a relaxed light breakfast before beginning your descent down the mountain back towards Dili. The drive offers beautiful changing landscapes as you wind your way through rural villages and coastal scenery, with a stop along the way at Lauhata Beach Retreat.

Here you can enjoy a leisurely lunch by the ocean, take a stroll along the beach, or simply relax with a refreshing cocktail while soaking up the laid-back coastal atmosphere. After your time at the beach, continue on to Dili where you will check into your hotel for your final night in Timor-Leste.

As the sun sets on your journey, there is no better way to celebrate your last evening than with dinner at one of the country’s most highly regarded restaurants, Pro Ema, where you can reflect on your adventures and savour your final meal of Timor.

Pro Ema is a social enterprise restaurant and training school in Dili, Timor-Leste, run by the Pro-EMA organisation. It operates as a hospitality and culinary training space where local young women gain hands-on experience in cooking, service, and restaurant operations as part of their professional development.

Open to the public, the restaurant serves high-quality, beautifully presented dishes with a strong European and contemporary influence, often highlighted for its desserts and attention to detail. Dining at Pro Ema is more than just a meal — it directly supports a meaningful community program that empowers vulnerable young women through education, skills training, and employment pathways in the hospitality industry.
