Here's what surprises most first-time visitors: Karlu Karlu is genuinely one of the most extraordinary natural sites in Australia — and it barely gets the attention it deserves.

Located 95 kilometres south of Tennant Creek along the Stuart Highway, Karlu Karlu is a collection of ancient granite boulders, some perfectly balanced, some split cleanly in two, scattered across a wide valley floor. They've been eroding and cracking for millions of years.

For the Warumungu, Kaytetye, Alyawarr, and Warlpiri peoples, Karlu Karlu is a place of deep spiritual significance. Walking through it is a different experience entirely to looking at photos — which, for once, genuinely don't do it justice.

Local Tip:

Get there at sunrise or sunset. The boulders shift from burnt orange to deep red to almost purple as the light changes. Arrive early, bring water, and allow at least two hours to walk the site properly.

Fossicking for Gold in Australia's Last Gold Rush Town

This is the one that surprises people most: you can still fossick for gold in Tennant Creek.

The Battery Hill Mining Centre on Peko Road is where it all started — the No. 3 Government Gold Stamp Battery, the centrepiece of the 1930s gold rush that put Tennant Creek on the map. Today, visitors can take a mine tour underground, explore three museum displays, and learn exactly how an outback gold rush turns into a functioning town.

But the real surprise? The gold never ran out. Tennant Creek is still considered one of the most prospective gold regions in Australia. With the right permit, you can head out and try your luck — and people do find gold here.

It's the kind of hands-on, genuine outback experience that's impossible to manufacture.

Nyinkka Nyunyu: A Cultural Experience That Changes How You See the Territory

The Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre in Tennant Creek is one of the finest cultural centres in the Northern Territory — and one of the most undervisited.

Built on Warumungu Country, Nyinkka Nyunyu offers visitors the chance to understand the living culture of the Warumungu people — their stories, their connection to Country, their art, and their history in this region that stretches back tens of thousands of years.

This isn't a museum in the traditional sense. It's an active, breathing cultural space. Allow at least half a day. The café on site — Jajjikari Café — is also well worth a stop.

Ask anyone who's spent a night in the Barkly and they'll tell you about the stars.

With minimal light pollution across the entire region, the night sky out here is something else entirely. The Milky Way is visible with the naked eye on a clear night, and clear nights are the norm for most of the year.

There's no gimmick here — no purpose-built stargazing platform or ticketed experience. Just the outback, the dark, and one of the best natural light shows on the planet.

The Tennant Creek Telegraph Station: History Hidden in Plain Sight

Most travellers on the Stuart Highway don't know the Tennant Creek Telegraph Station is there. It's one of the original stations built along the Overland Telegraph Line in the 1870s — part of the extraordinary engineering project that connected Darwin to Adelaide and changed Australia forever.

A self-guided walking trail takes you around the historic site, with interpretive signage explaining the stories of the people who built it, lived there, and kept the line running across some of the most remote country in the world.

It's free to visit, genuinely fascinating, and takes around an hour. Don't skip it.

Planning Your Visit to Tennant Creek and the Barkly Region

The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to September. Days are warm and sunny, mornings are cool, and the roads are in their best condition. This is also peak fossicking and outdoor exploration season.

Things to do in Darwin at Easter: Camping

Easter isn't quite the official dry season, so you'll find that many camping and swimming spots aren't open just yet.

We've compiled a list of some of the places you will be able to camp and swim over the Easter and School Holiday period. Make sure you double check NT Parks or Parks Australia before you hit the road.

Litchfield National Park

A lot of the swimming holes in Litchfield are currently closed, but you can still make the most of what is open over the Easter and school holiday period. We recommend camping at Wangi Falls, and then heading up the road to Cascade Falls to cool off in the Upper Pools during the day. Both the 4WD and 2WD campgrounds at Florence Falls are also open.

While Florence Falls is currently closed, you can still do the Florence Creek Walk and check out the falls from above at the lookout.

Nitmiluk Gorge - Katherine

Southern Rockhole is at its finest at the end of the wet season, so take the opportunity to spend the weekend at Nitmiluk National Park. Camp at Nitmiluk Gorge and hang out at Southern Rockhole during the day, which is a 8km return walk from the carpark. Alternatively you can catch a ferry either one way or return to reach the rockhole.

If you don't feel like camping, there's other accommodation options at Nitmiluk including cabins and the Cicada lodge. You can make your accommodation booking for Nitmiluk Gorge through Nitmiluk Tours .

Edith Falls - Katherine

Spend your Easter camping at the gorgeous green grass campgrounds of Edith Falls. While the bottom plunge pool is still closed for swimming, you can enjoy swimming in the upper pools. Take the 2.6km loop walk up to the pools and spend the day cooling off and relaxing on the rocks.

If you feel like exploring some more, continue walking up to Sweetwater Pool. This is a 9km return walk from the Edith Falls carpark. Sweetwater Pool is also currently open for swimming.

Umbrawarra Gorge

The end of the wet season and early dry season is the best time to visit Umbrawarra Gorge. This is when the gorge is full and flowing where you'll find the gorge starts to dry out later in the year.

From the campgrounds, it's an easy 1km walk along the creek to the gorge, but you can swim and rock hop along the way too. You'll need a 4WD to reach Umbrawarra, and don't forget to take your own water supply.

Kakadu National Park

Swim, camp and explore Kakadu over the Easter period. Here's our top things to do:

Do the Yurmikmik Walks and cool off in Motor Car or Kurrundie Falls before it dries out for the dry season

Tropical summer in Kakadu National Park

Contrary to popular belief, the tropical summer season from November to April might just be the best time to visit Kakadu National Park. When the rains arrive, the land becomes lush and green, waterfalls and waterholes are at their most spectacular and the park is brimming with wildlife.

There’s also a misconception that it rains all the time during tropical summer. Unless there’s a monsoon, you’ll often only get a shower or two in the afternoon so there’s still plenty of time to explore.

Tropical summer also means less tourists, so you can enjoy taking in the beauty of Kakadu without the crowds of people.

Here’s our local tips on what to do and where to stay in Kakadu during tropical summer.

Experiences and things to do in Kakadu

Take a scenic flight over Kakadu

Seeing Kakadu from the air is one of the best ways to experience the park during tropical summer. Popular Jim Jim Falls is inaccessible by road during this season, so seeing this 200 metre waterfall from the air when water roars over the top is truly spectacular. You’ll also fly over the top of rainforest, stone country and other water holes such as Twin Falls.

Cruise along the Yellow Water Billabong

Discover the beauty of the wetlands onboard the Yellow Waters Cruise. Spot crocodiles and learn about the diversity of this river ecosystem. Tropical summer is also the best time to see birds and other wildlife. We recommend the dusk cruise which is one of the most magical times of day on the billabong.

Watch the sunset from U birr

Take a short walk to the top of Ubirr Rock for incredible views across the flood plains. Take some drinks, nibbles and a picnic blanket and settle in to watch the sunset (many locals will argue that wet season sunsets are in fact better than the dry). Also be sure to check out the rock art sites on the walk up.

Do t he Yurmikmik walks

This series of interconnected walks are best done during tropical summer when the water holes are full with fresh water and ready for you to swim in. Traverse through monsoonal rainforests and stone country before cooling off in a creek or plunge pool. You can opt to do a shorted 30 minute walk (2km), or venture further to Yurmikmik Lookout, Motor Car Falls or Kurrundie Falls.

Darwin gears up for the FIM Motocross World Championship

Motocross returns to Australia– A must-see event!

Darwin is about to make history as it welcomes the FIM Motocross World Championship back to Australia for the first time in 24 years!

Taking place in Darwin from September 2025 until 2029, with the possibility of extending the collaboration beyond the initial five-year term, this is no ordinary motorsport event. It’s the pinnacle of motocross racing, where the world’s top riders push their limits in one of the most physically demanding disciplines in motorsport.

The new round will be held on a purpose-built track at the Hidden Valley Motorsports Complex in Darwin and will be broadcast to over 100 countries.

What's happening in Darwin ?

Set for September 2024, this event will feature the MXGP and MX2 championship rounds, bringing elite riders from around the globe to the Northern Territory’s capital.

What makes this event even more exciting is its exclusivity. Darwin will be the only Australian stop on the global tour . For Aussie motorsport fans, this is a rare opportunity to witness motocross at its absolute peak, right here at home. First up, we have the Darwin Waterfront Precinct. This urban oasis is a local favourite - and for good reason. With its saltwater lagoon in addition to the Wave Pool, you can soak up the sun while enjoying a refreshing swim. Make the most of the surrounding restaurants and cafes at the precinct too - grab some tacos and a margarita at Hot Tamale, dig into some fresh seafood at Oyster bar, or indulge in a cold beer at the Precinct Tavern.

Mindil Beach Casino Resort INFINITY pool

Darwin CBD

If you're a fan of poolside cocktail vibes with ocean views, head to the INIFITY pool at Mindil Beach Casino Resort. Open Thursday to Sunday from 12pm to 8pm, spend your arvo indulging in happy hour specials, lounging on a sunbed, swimming and soaking up harbour views. This is also a social hot spot in Darwin, particularly on Saturdays and Sundays when the pool is buzzing with weekend energy.

Florence Falls

Florence Falls stands as an undisputed icon among Darwin's wet season swimming spots. It's also less than a two hour drive from Darwin, making it an easy day trip destination. During the wet season the falls are at their most impressive, tumbling into the stunning plunge pool surrounded by lush tropical greenery. We recommend taking the stairs from the carpark to the plunge pool for great views of the falls. On the way back, opt for the 1km walk along Shady Creek (this is also a great way to avoid the walking back up the stairs).

Buley Rockhole

Litchfield National Park

Just a five minute drive from Florence Falls you'll arrive at another crowd favourite - Buley Rockhole. The natural rock formations at Buley create a series of cascading pools that are perfect for cooling off during the hot humid months. Float in the pools, sunbath on the rocks and soak in the Litchfield vistas.

Upper Cascades

Litchfield National Park

If you're looking for an escape from the crowds at Litchfield, make your way to Upper Cascades. While the lower pools may be off-limits during the wet season, you can still embark on a scenic 2.6km round-trip hike to the Upper Cascade Pools. With fewer visitors around, you'll often have the chance to claim your own tranquil oasis, perfect for a rejuvenating swim and a leisurely sunbathing session.

Motor Car Falls

Kakadu National Park

There's few places in the Top End that are exclusively wet season swimming spots, but Motor Car Falls is one of our favourites. This pristine waterfall is a must-do if you want to experience the beauty of our wet season here in the Top End. The falls are only accessible by foot, so pack your walking shoes ready for the 7.5km return walk. The trail to the falls is a part of the interconnected Yurmikmik Walks, where you'll get to traverse stunning stone country and monsoonal forests to reach the plunge pool for your well deserved dip. Southern Rockhole

Nitmiluk National Park

Another wet season only gem can be found in Nitmiluk National Park, just outside of Katherine. Southern Rockhole is nestled near the top of the first gorge, boasting a seasonal waterfalls that cascades between the sandstone cliffs and into the plunge pool. You can reach the rockhole by walking 4km (each way) or by jump on a ferry. To get the best of both worlds we recommend walking one way and ferrying the other.

What makes Timor-Leste a great travel destination?

Timor-Leste offers something for everyone. Diving, history, coffee, agriculture, adventure - you name it, you can do it in Timor-Leste!

Plus the people are incredibly welcoming, generous and want to share their culture with you.

The fact that it is only a 75 minute flight from Darwin also makes it a perfect getaway destination for Territorians.

What are your top places to visit in Timor-Leste?

Depending on the type of experiences you want in Timor Leste, these are some of my favourite places to visit.

Atauro Island

For some of Timor Leste’s best diving and snorkelling , Atauro Island is a must do. Located north of Dili, you can get to Atauro Island by boat in 1.5 hours, or by a 20 minute flight (subject to availability).

Dili

Spend a couple of days at the start or end of your trip and discover Timor-Leste’s capital Dili. You can expect delicious food , museums and lots of culture .

Baucau

This is the second largest city in Timor-Leste, and is located about 122km west of Dili. Overlooking the sea, you can enjoy pristine beaches and beautiful posada , and the older part of town has a strong Portuguese influence - see colonial buildings and wander through the beautiful old market square .

Balibo

Just 10km from the Indonesian border, Balibo is rich in history and has a backdrop of mountain views. Visit the Balibo Fort and new museum.

Maubisse

If you’re into hiking and mountains , head 70km south to Dili to the historic town of Maubisse. Expect cooler weather and enjoy relaxing amongst nature .

Liquica

This is another gorgeous beach town, only 32km west of Dili. Recommended for relaxing by the ocean , you can also see some of the towns abandoned colonial buildings .

What else should I know about visiting Timor-Leste?

Visas

If you’re an Australian passport holder you don’t have to worry about organising a Visa prior to arriving. You will be eligible for a Visa on arrival when they enter Timor-Leste. You will need to have $30USD cash on hand to pay for this VISA. This visa is valid for up to 30 days in the country.

Currency

The country's main currency is USD, using United States dollar notes as well as Timor-Leste centavo coins. We recommend that you bring USD cash with you in smaller denominations such as $5, $10 and $20 bills. Also note that Timor-Leste only takes Visa credit and debit cards.

When is the best time to visit Timor-Leste?

Keep in mind that Timor-Leste has a weather system very similar to Darwin with a wet season between November and April, and dry season between May and October.

If you want to dive, the best time is May- November. The whale migration season is October and November. However, if you want to just visit the country and do some day tours outside of Dili you can travel any time of the year.

Darwin's biggest music festival is back this year at Mindil Beach. Attracting festival goers from right around Australia, Bass is renowned for its beachside location, awesome lineups and dry season weather.

Make the most of the festival's two stages, silent disco, multiple bars and tasty food stalls to keep you fuelled. There's also few festivals in Australia where you can stroll down to the beach to watch the sunset!

Darwin Cup Carnival

July-August

The Darwin Cup Carnival is held throughout July each year and culminates with the running of the Darwin Cup in early August. Held on the 'picnic-day' Monday public holiday the Darwin Cup is Australia's richest race on dirt.

The Cup sees people from all over Australia swarm to the Fannie Bay Race Course for a day of racing, fashion and entertainment.

Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair

The Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) happens over 3 big days every August. The fair is held at the Darwin Convention Centre and sees over seventy Indigenous owned community art centres exhibit.

It's a fantastic place to buy Indigenous art from the source without having to travel great distances to do so. The fair is primarily known as a place to purchase art but also includes workshops, traditional dance, film, fashion and music.

MAGNT features an impressive collection of internationally renowned art, cultural and scientific displays, that tell the unique stories and traditions of the Northern Territory. If you'd like to learn more about Darwin's history, don't miss the chance to visit the Darwin Military Museum, where you can learn about the city's military past and its significance during World War II.

Evening
As the sun starts to set, head down to the Ski Club - a favourite spot for Darwin locals. Grab a cold beer and a meal, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and stunning views of the ocean. Day 3- Adventuring down the track

Morning

Time to head down the track see more of the Top End. Start your day with the famous Jumping Crocodile Cruise on Adelaide River, just a 50 minute drive south of Darwin. We recommend booking the 9am cruise to make the most of the day. Led by knowledgable local guides, cruise along the Adelaide River as powerful crocodiles launch themselves out of the water to snatch their prey, showing off their agility and raw power. The cruise also gives you the chance to get up close with other iconic Territory wildlife, including Water Buffalo and a variety of bird species.

Afternoon

After all the thrilling crocodile-spotting adventures, consider heading to Berry Springs and its clear, spring-fed pools surrounded by lush vegetation. It's the perfect place to swim and relax, especially on a hot afternoon.

Evening
After a busy day of exploring, you'll be ready to refuel. Make a stop to the Berry Springs Tavern for a typical Top End pub feed. Alternatively, you could head back into town and grab some takeaway to enjoy on the Nightcliff Foreshore or at East Point Reserve where you can relish the beautiful sunset views.

Day 4 - Litchfield National Park

Morning

Begin your morning with a visit to the iconic Wangi Falls. Here, you can take a refreshing swim in the large plunge pool or opt for a leisurely walk around the area. From Wangi Falls, a short drive will take you to Tolmer Falls, where you can enjoy stunning views from the viewing platform. For lunch, there are several picnic and barbecue areas within the park. Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole offer great facilities for a relaxed midday meal.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, continue your exploration by returning to Florence Falls. The large plunge pool invites you for another refreshing swim, or you can choose to take a walk to the viewing platform. For a picturesque end to your day, head back to Wangi Falls in the late afternoon. The falls offer a serene setting to watch the sun as it sets over Litchfield National Park.

Day 5 - Kakadu National Park

Morning

To make the most of your day, begin with an early start from Darwin, as the park is approximately a 2 to 2.5-hour drive away. Commence your morning at the Bowali Visitor Centre, an informative gateway to Kakadu. Here, you can gather essential information about the park, its cultural significance, and the range of activities and trails available.

From the visitor centre, venture to the Nourlangie Rock Art Site, renowned for its ancient Aboriginal rock art and shelters. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in the indigenous culture and the deep history of the region.

After your morning explorations, take a break for lunch, whether it's a leisurely picnic at a designated area within the park or a meal at one of the nearby cafes.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, embark on the iconic Yellow Water Cruise, one of Kakadu's must-see experiences. This guided cruise takes you through the serene waters of the Yellow Water Billabong, offering incredible opportunities to spot crocodiles, abundant birdlife, and other wildlife. The wetlands take on a special beauty in the late afternoon light. Following the cruise, journey to Maguk, also known as Barramundi Gorge. A short hike leads you to a secluded natural pool where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. The surrounding gorge is framed by dramatic cliffs, providing a peaceful atmosphere for relaxation.

Evening
As evening approaches, you have the option to stay overnight in Kakadu, as there are great accommodation options in the area. So if you're planning a trip to Bali, here are a few things you need to do to ensure you have a smooth trip.

What is the best time to visit Bali?

The ideal time to visit Bali largely depends on your preferences.

The dry season, which runs from April to September, is the most popular time for Australian tourists due to the pleasant weather and lower humidity.

The wet season, from October to March, might bring occasional heavy rainfall, but it also showcases Bali's lush green landscapes and fewer crowds.

February 2024: Introducing the New Bali Tourism Levy

This is the novelty of 2024 ! Bali's Provincial Government has implemented a Tourism Levy of 150 000 Rp per person, starting on February , aimed at promoting a more sustainable tourism growth.

To facilitate this, you are urged to pay in advance through the Love Bali website or app to streamline their arrival process at Ngurah Rai International Airport.

However, exemptions are available for long-stay permit holders and specific visa categories. This exemption requests must be processed via through the Love Bali website.

This initiative showcases Bali's deep commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes as tourism continues to grow. It's driving forward greener practices and boosting the quality of tourism services for a more enjoyable and sustainable visitor experience.

Entering Indonesia - Visas requirements

Australian citizens are eligible for a Visa on arrival (VOA) upon landing into Bali. There are a number of other nationalities that are also eligible for VOA.

You will need to show proof of a return flight ticket, and your passport will need to have a minimum of 6 months validity .

The Visa will cost IDR 500,000 (A$50). You can pay in cash or with your credit or debit card.

Before landing in Bali, you will need to complete an Electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD) .

Note: Be aware that Indonesian authorities won't accept coins, and any change will be given back to you in IDR.

Travel Insurance

Securing a thorough travel insurance policy is a definite must before embarking on your Bali adventure.
Failing to have comprehensive travel insurance can result in having to foot the bill for medical treatment in Bali, with certain hospitals even demanding upfront payment before commencing treatment.

Indonesian medical facilities may not be as advanced as those in Australia. Consequently, in the event of a severe illness or accident, evacuation to Australia might be required, incurring a staggering cost, often amounting to tens of thousands of dollars.

Ensure that your insurance policy covers a range of critical aspects, including medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and protection for lost belongings. Having the right insurance in place not only protect your finances but also offers peace of mind throughout your trip!

Health Precautions

Before embarking on your journey to Bali, consult with your healthcare provider about recommended vaccinations and health precautions.

Located in the Darwin CBD, Croc Cove is a must-visit attraction that boasts some of the largest Saltwater Crocodiles in Australia. For teens who are 15 or older and feel like getting the adrenaline pumping, the notorious Cage of Death at Croc Cove is a must-do. Get plunged into a pool with a 5m saltwater crocodile - one of Australia's largest apex predators. If the Cage of Death doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, there’s still heaps to do at Croc Cove. Check out the other animals, watch the reptile show or go fishing for crocs.

2. Darwin Waterfront

Escape the heat and dive into the Darwin Waterfront, with heaps of fun activities for kids of all ages. The Wave Lagoon is a crowd favourite, giving kids the chance to catch a wave without stingers or crocs. Need to burn some more energy? Check out the Aqua Part for a fun obstacle challenge. Our favourite time to go on the ferris wheel is sunset when the sky transforms into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples. The Skyline Ferris Wheel is open for the dry season period.

6. Aquascene Darwin

Head down to Doctor’s Gully for one of Darwin’s iconic family friendly activities - Aquascene . When the tide rises, the tropical waters at Doctor’s Gully become a haven for fish feeding. Feed the fish from the stairs of wade into the water to get up close and personal with these scaly friends.

7. Territory Wildlife Park

Take a day trip from Darwin to the Territory Wildlife Park , just 45 minutes south of the Darwin CBD. The park gives you an exciting insight into plant and animal life in the Top End - kids can expect to see wallabies, crocodiles, birds of prey, snakes and more. There's lot of interactive presentations and talks throughout the day too including the Flight Deck presentation and wallaby muster.

Experience the best of fishing in the Darwin region

Before you start planning your next fishing adventure in the Northern Territory, learn about the different types of fishing you can do in this anglers paradise.

Barra fishing

The Top End is considered one of the best places in the world to hook these iconic fish. Choose from barra fishing in the open seas, or try your luck in one of the Top End rivers.

The best time to fish for barra is in the build up between October and December when barra breeding season starts. The ‘run-off’ season between March and April is also a great time for barra around the mouths of creeks and rivers.

Even better, from October to May the annual Million Dollar Fish comps is on. This means you have the chance to catch a tagged barra worth a whopping $1M! There are also a bunch of other prized barra to be caught.

Bluewater and reef fishing

Cast a line in the Top End's turquoise seas and experience some of the best bluewater and reef fishing in Australia.

March and April are excellent months for bluewater fishing. The wet season wind has diminished, and the dry season wind is yet to start meaning the seas are calm.

Both sport and reef fish are active in the bluewater at this time - expect pelagic species like queenfish, giant trevally and golden trevally, and reef fish like golden snapper and black jewfish.

Mudcrabbing

Do something a little different on your trip to the Top End and give mud crabbing a go. Mud crabs are found in creeks and rivers, and on coastal flats at creek mouths.

Most mud crab are caught during the Dry Season from May to October. The Top End's huge tidal variation also means conditions change rapidly - an incoming tide is likely to give you the best crabbing, and fish pieces are known to be good bait.

Inland fishing

The Top End's inland systems offer a great opportunity to catch a variety of tropical fish.

There are lots of inland fishing options just a couple hours drive from the Darwin CBD. Explore Mary River, Adelaide River, or head down the track a little further to experience fishing in Kakadu - one of the Top End's most iconic national parks.

Everyone loves a good sunset. It's hard not to fall in love with a place as you watch the sun go down and see the vibrant hues of pinks, yellows and oranges fill the sky.

In the Territory and the Kimberley, we are lucky to have some of the most stunning backdrops and vantage points to watch the sunset in Australia. And during the wet season, when nature puts on an extraordinary show with a mesmerizing mix of colors and occasional storm lightning, these sunsets become even more magical.

Coroboree Billabong

Corroboree Billabong is part of the Mary River Wetlands and offers and incredible landscape to watch the sunset. The wetlands are teaming with birds, Saltwater Crocodiles and other unique Top End wildlife.

For a true Territory sunset experience, Wetlands Tours run sunset cruises through the billabong. Watch the changing colour of the sky and observe animals when they're at their most active.

Ubirr Rock, Kakadu

Ubirr Rock in Kakadu National Park is one of Kakadu's most famous lookouts and attracts locals and visitors right throughout the year. The Ubirr lookout offers 360 degree views of Arnhem Land the Nadab floodplain, which are at their most spectacular during golden hour.

As you walk up to the lookout, you'll pass sites of ancient Aboriginal rock art telling powerful st ories of history and culture.

Ubirr is in the north-east part of Kakadu, around 42km from the town of Jabiru. If you're in Kakadu, a sunset at Ubirr is a must-do.

East Point

East Point reserve is a local favourite for sunsets. The ocean-side bike path winds around different parts of the reserve giving you unique spots to view the sunset all year round.

Relax on the beach, sit on the rocks or enjoy a BBQ at one of the picnic spots.

Katherine from the sky

Ever watched the sun set from a Helicopter? See the stunning Katherine landscape from the sky as your private helicopter flies along Katherine River and the 13 sandstone gorges in Nitmiluk National Park.

Your helicopter will park up on top of one of the gorges so you can enjoy the sunset with a champagne in hand and cheese board to nibble on.

Drive along the moderate 4WD track for 9.3km, crossing the Pentecost river before reaching the viewing platform. Admire the pastel colours of the sky against the river and sandstone cliffs.

The Street Art Festival returns

The streets of Darwin are about to burst into a riot of colours and creativity as the Darwin Street Art Festival returns for its seventh year. This festival is a celebration of talented artists who breathe life into the city's outdoor spaces, making it a must-visit event.

Starting in Alice Springs, the festival road tripped up the Stuart Highway making stops at Pine Creek and Katherine to paint murals along the way. The festival then reached the Darwin suburbs before the final murals were painted on the streets of the CBD.

The start of a new tradition

The Darwin Street Art Festival was launched in 2017, and since then we’ve seen street art take off right around Darwin. City walls and buildings have become canvases for some incredible local and national artists.

In a successful first year 8 murals were painted by high profile interstate and local artists and in 2018, another 16 murals were completed in the CBD.

While the festival originally started in the CBD, expanding into the suburbs and the rest of the Territory has given artists the opportunity to showcase their works to a bigger audience. Locals and visitors also get to enjoy more vibrant street art!

Easy trails

Atetherre [a-TUT-tha-da]
Get a taste of the Westside trails with this beginner friendly ride, starting at the Lovegrove Trailhead. As the primary entry point to the Westside network, if you’re comfortable on this 4km route you can continue exploring the intermediate trails in the area. Once you reach Westside Junction, you can connect with the Nturrerte (n-DOR-uh-da) and Locomotive trails.

Simpsons Gap Mountain Bike Trail

This 17km cross country path is great for people of all fitness levels. From the starting point at Flynn’s Grave (about 7km from the edge of Alice Springs), ride 1-2 hours to your end point of Simpsons Gap in the West MacDonnell Ranges. The path meanders past creeks, River Red Gum woodlands and Mulga and Witchetty Bush groves. Stop along the way at the rest areas to take a break and appreciate the surrounding bushland.

Intermediate trails

Larapinta Trail (shared)

If you’re not hiking Larapinta but still want to experience this iconic trail, you can enjoy riding along a section as a part of the Westside trails. Running from the Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the Railway Line, this 3km trail is a great opportunity to get a glimpse of Larapinta. Don’t forget this is a shared trail, so always give way to walkers and take care while you’re riding.

Apwelantye [aPULLundge]

Apwelantye (Black Kite) is one of the longest intermediate trails in the network at 11km. You’ll need to ride along the beginner trail Arrwe to reach the Apwelantye trailhead. The length of this trail means you’ll have the chance to see a huge amount of spectacular Alice Springs landscapes. Don’t forget to stock up on water before you go!

Advanced Trails

Bob Gnarly

True to its name, this 1km one-way trail is designed for experienced riders only. Don’t be fooled by its short distance - Bob Gnarly delivers a challenging technical descent that demands skill, precision and a bit of nerve. Soak up the views at the top before making your way down.

Bus

This one-way trail features a challenging climb to a spectacular lookout, followed by a technical rocky ascent - it's not for the faint heater. Bus runs between Nturrerte and Locomotive, so warm up on these intermediate trails before taking on this advanced route.

Located at the Darwin Military Museum at East Point, you’ll have the chance to hear first-hand accounts of people who experienced the Bombing of Darwin through an audio-visual journey. You can also download the Defence of Darwin Experience app , which is a self-guided tour of 16 WWII heritage sites across the Top End. You can download the app on the App Store or Google Play .

The Darwin History and Wartime Experience

Hop on board a genuine WWII army truck and explore key historical wartime sites around Darwin. You’ll learn about important sights including Government House, ammunition storage bunkers, anti-aircraft gun replacements and the 1934 Qantas hanger. While there is a focus on pre-war and the Bombing of Darwin, you’ll also learn about the devastation of Cyclone Tracy.

RFDS Tourist Facility

For a unique perspective on Darwin’s history, head over to the RFSD (Royal Flying Doctor Service) Darwin Tourist Facility at Stokes Hill Wharf. The facility shares two iconic Territory stories; the Bombing of Darwin and also the role of the RFDS in the NT. Learn about the experiences of the RFDS since it began in 1939, and delve into the Bombing of Darwin history through holograms, interactive storytelling and virtual reality.

WWII Tunnels

This experience deserves a prime spot on your Darwin bucket list. Get a glimpse into Darwin’s military history and learn about the key role these navy oil storage tunnels played in the overall defence strategy for Australia and the Pacific region. The WWII tunnels are at the Darwin Waterfront, so have a wander and grab a bite to eat at the precinct afterwards.

Best places to swim in Alice Springs

In the heart of the desert, the Alice Springs region may not seem like an obvious destination for swimming. Against the expectations of many visitors, the Red Centre hides a wealth of stunning locations for a refreshing swim.

Before you go: Before embarking on your desert swimming adventures, always check NT Parks to make sure the waterhole you’re visiting is open and accessible.

Redbank Gorge

Aboriginal name: Yarretyeke

Located 156km west of Alice Springs at the base of Mount Sonder, Redbank Gorge is characterised by a red rock chasm that towers over the gorge waters. Float through the narrow chasm on a lilo or tube and soak in the surrounding West Mac landscapes. You can reach the banks of the gorge in a short 1km walk from the carpark.

Ormiston Gorge

Aboriginal name: Kwartatuma

A beach in the desert! The sandy banks of Ormiston Gorge are a local favourite, located 135 km from Alice Springs. Surrounded by rich red cliffs, this permanent swimming hole is the perfect spot to cool off after a day of exploring. Relax under the shade of the trees and enjoy the ambience of this little desert sanctuary. You’ll arrive at the banks of the gorge in just a 500m walk from the carpark. To get some extra steps in and see more of the West Mac’s spectacular geology, do the 3-4 hour Ormiston Pound Walk.

Ellery Creek Big Hole

Aboriginal name: Udepata

Sculpted from years of rain and flooding, Ellery Creek Big Hole is a picturesque spot to swim, camp, picnic and hike in the West Macs. Ellery Creek is also one of the closest water holes you can reach from Alice Springs, just 80km west of the CBD, making it an easy day trip. To explore the area, do the 3km Dolomite Walk before submerging yourself in the refreshing gorge water. Ellery Creek is also one of the stops of the famous Larapinta Trail, so if you want an extended adventure you can do the Ellery Creek Loop Walk. This 3 day journey traverses along sections 6 and 7 of Larapinta.

Glen Helen Gorge

This expansive gorge is where the West MacDonnell Ranges create a passage for the Finke River. Delivering incredible panoramic views of the ranges and Mount Sonder, Glen Helen Gorge is an ideal spot for a dip. As you float through the waters and explore the area, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife including birds, fish and other desert creatures.

5. Check out the Katherine Museum

Uncover the rich history and heritage of Katherine by paying a visit to the Katherine Museum. The Katherine Museum is a treasure trove of historical artefacts and memorabilia housed in the former World War II regional air terminal. The museum showcases a wide range of collections that provide a rich insight into the region's past.

6. Connect with culture at Top Didj

Learn about the culture of the Jawoyn and Dagoman people through a visit to the Top Didj Cultural Experience. Engage with local Indigenous artists as they share their stories, traditions, and artistic techniques. You can even try your hand at painting and boomerang throwing. 7. Swim and explore Leliyn (Edith Falls)

Extend your Katherine adventure with a day trip to Mataranka, just 120km south of Katherine in Elsey National Park. Know where to go in one of the largest wilderness landscapes in the world

Lake Argyle

If you’re travelling to Western Australia from the Territory, Lake Argyle might be one of your first stops as you cross the border. This vast freshwater lake is known as the jewel of the Kimberley.

Nestled among rugged landscapes, Lake Argyle is a short 45 minute drive from the town of Kununurra. We recommend staying at Lake Argyle Resort and Caravan Park for stunning lake views and the infinity pool described as one of the most breathtaking in Australia.

To properly explore the lake, being out on the water is the best way to do it. Do it your way by hiring a boat, joining a guided tour or even opting to spend the day kayaking.

There’s also excellent fishing in the area, and mountain bike trails for those adventure-inclined travellers.

El Questro

El Questro is packed with adventure in the heart of the Kimberley. This secluded wilderness park is the best way to escape the crowds and switch off from the world for a few days.

Originally a cattle station, El Questro has become one of Australia’s most popular outback destinations. The park is loved for its many gorges that wind through the ancient Country. Emma Gorge, Amalia Gorge and El Questro Gorge are must do’s - expect a walk to get to each, so we recommend checking out distances and walking grades before you go. Don’t forget to pack your togs and hiking shoes!

One of the great things about El Questro is that it caters to all types of travellers. There’s a variety of accommodation options, so you can choose to camp or stay in a luxury room if you’re feeling a little fancy.

Broome

Broome is a vibrant coastal town in the Kimberley known for its pristine waters, white sandy beaches and tropical climate. Expect dramatic sunsets all year round and immerse yourself in this melting pot of culture.

Although there are a range of day trip options from Broome, you can easily spend 3-4 days exploring the town itself. Broome is home to the South Sea Pearl, so one of the most popular things to do is take a tour of one of the nearby farms and learn about the history of the pearling town.

You can also discover the famous white sands of Cable Beach by enjoying a stroll and swim in your own time, or by taking a camel ride into the sunset. After a day of adventuring, reward yourself by trying some of Australia’s best craft beers at Matso’s Brewery.

Purnululu National Park

Just 250km south of Kununurra, Purnululu National Park has a huge diversity of landscapes to explore.

The park is home to one of Australia’s most striking geological landmarks - the Bungle Bungle Range. You can choose to explore the world heritage listed site by ground by doing the Domes Walk, or by air in a helicopter tour or scenic flight. Both options give you a unique view of the range.

The Domes Walk is connected to the Cathedral Gorge Walk, which is a moderate 4km trail that leads to the spectacular red rock amphitheatre. This is one of the easiest gorges to access in Purnululu, and also one of the most stunning.

While the Bungle Bungle Range is at the southern end of the park, Echidna Chasm in the northern section is another one of Purnululu’s highlights. The soaring 200m high walls of the chasm stretch for more than 750m, and at times can be less than 1 metre wide.

There are several campgrounds in Purnululu, but you can also opt to stay in one of the park's eco lodges. We recommend checking out the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge.

Consider the time of year you're visiting

For barra fishing, March, April and May is the famous 'run-off' season. This is an excellent time of year for targeting big barramundi at major river mouths and upstream gutters as water subsides from the floodplains.

September, October and November is another great time for barra fishing. As the weather warms up during the 'build-up', you'll find barra in the saltwater around our harbours and tributaries.

The 'Dry Season' June/July/August produces the goods on Pelagic and Bluewater Species due to cooler water temperatures. You can find Mackeral, Queenfish, Trevally, Sailfish, Cobia often in large numbers.

Decide what type of fish you want to catch

If it’s a Day Charter you are after, first decide if you would prefer to catch an elusive top end Barramundi or a powerful Black Jewfish, Spanish Mackeral or other reef species. Both sport-fishing options are available during a day trip.

Catching a Barramundi will usually involve casting and trolling lures in a beautiful Top End Billabong or casting coastal drains from a 5-6 metre vessel with up to 4 clients in total. Your guide will pick you up and drop you off from your place of stay. Corroboree Billabong is a popular location for a day trip, with spectacular scenery, immense bird life, wild crocodiles and barramundi most often on the bite!

The Bluewater Reef/Sportfishing Option for reef and pelagic species will be a larger vessel likely with up to 8 clients on board, departing from Cullen Bay in Darwin or Dundee Beach on some occasions. Day trips, extended trips and Multi Day trips are available. It is common to catch big Black Jewfish, Golden Snapper, Spanish Mackeral, Trevally, Northern Bluefin Tuna and many other reef species aboard this option.

Bait, tackle & rods

If you're visiting Darwin, it's unlikely you'll have all the supplies you need. To make your life easy, check that your fishing charter supplies the gear you need for a great day on the water. That includes bait, tackle and rods.

Birdwatching in the NT by region

Uluru

While primarily known for its stunning rock formations, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is also home to over 170 bird species. This includes rare species such as the scarlet-chested parrot and the grey-headed honeyeater.

In local Anagu culture, there are different types of birds in the park depending on their habitat.

TIPS

Before you head to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, make sure you download the Uluru Birds app. This can help you to identify different birds, learn about their calls and also find out information about the walks you can do in the area to spot different species.

Kakadu National Park

Kakadu National Park is one of the best-known destinations for birdwatching and wildlife spotting in the Northern Territory. The park offers a range of walking trails and viewing platforms, as well as boat tours on the Yellow Water Billabong which provide an up-close view of the park's birdlife and other wildlife. Some of the birds you can expect to see in Kakadu include the brolga, magpie goose, egret, black-necked stork (Jabiru) and azure kingfisher.

If you’re keen to combine swimming and bird watching, we recommend Maguk and the Yurmikmik Walks. The paperbark swamp leading to Maguk is the perfect opportunity to spot rainbow pittas. On your way to Motor Car Falls on the Yurmikmik Walks, keep keep your eyes peeled near salmon gums and termite mounds for the Gouldian finch and hooded parrot.

TIPS

If it works with your schedule, plan your trip around Kakadu Bird Week. This year it runs from 29 September to 8 October, coinciding with magpie geese migration. Kakadu Bird Week is a celebration of the diverse bird life in the NT, and includes talks from specialists, cultural events and unique birdwatching tours.

Arnhem Land

This remote and untouched corner of the Northern Territory is host to diverse ecosystems, attracting a large range of bird species.

If you’re in Arnhem Land’s main town of Nhulunbuy, we recommend the Gayngaru Wetlands interpretive walk. The area has large cultural significance to local Aboriginal people and is home to over 200 bird species. Keep your eye out for sightings of the northern fantail, blue-faced honeyeater, white-bellied cuckooshrike and brown falcon.

Arnhem Land is home to a multitude of islands dotting its coastline, which are key migratory spots for seabird breeding. Among these islands, Higginson Island stands out as a crucial breeding ground for Bridled and Roseate Terns, boasting internationally significant numbers of these species. Other islands that support breeding include East Bremer, Veronica, and Foelsche Rock.

TIPS
The best time for birdwatching in Arnhem Land is generally May to December, but for migrating waders it’s suggested you visit during March and April or August to October. To see waders, visit tidal seashore - Arnhem Land Barramundi Nature Lodge has boats for this purpose.

Darwin

A haven for bird enthusiasts, the Darwin region boasts over 400 bird species. There’s endless bird watching opportunities from coastal areas and mangroves to urban parks and nature reserves.

Day trip bird watching destinations from Darwin:

Fogg Dam Conservation Area - For Jabiru's, pied herons, egrets and more.
Tiwi Islands - For seabird rookeries and migratory shorebirds, as well as the largest colony of Crested Terns in the world. You’ll need a permit for the Tiwi Islands, but your tour operator can help you with this.
Mary River National Park - for the azure kingfisher, Australasian darter, plus black and whistling Kites.
Litchfield National Park - Find black kites, yellow orioles, figbirds, koel, spangled drongos, dollarbirds and the rainbow bee-eater in the sheltered areas near waterfalls.
Territory Wildlife Park - See birds in their natural habitat and also watch the flight deck presentation.

TIPS
If you’re interested in spotting some crocodiles while you birdwatch, do the Spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruise along the Adelaide River, just 1 hour south of Darwin.

Katherine

Known as where the tropics meet the outback, Katherine is unique for having a colourful mix of landscapes. With over 240 species of birds thriving in the greater Katherine region, this is one of the best places in Australia to birdwatch.

Some of the top locations include:

Leliyn (Edith Falls) - Gouldian finch, red-backed fairywren, varied lorikeet
Nitmiluk Gorge - Azure kingfisher, chestnut-quilled Rock Pigeon, great-billed Heron
Elsey National Park - Crested Shrike-tit (Northern form), Arafura fantial, banded honeyeater
Cutta Cutta Caves - More than 170 species of birds inhabit this area, including the hooded parrot.

The best Aboriginal art & culture events in the Top End

Garrmalang Festival

24 - 28 May 2023

This three day event is held on Larrakia Country in Darwin, and is Australia’s only major arts event led by First Nations people. The festival is the traditional name of what is now known as the Darwin CBD - Garrmalang.

Garrmalang Festival showcases talent from all corners of the country, including dance, comedy, music, talks, art exhibitions and pop-up market stalls. View the full program here .

Tip: Garrmalang will be at the Darwin Entertainment Centre which is right next to the Darwin Esplanade. Jump on a Neuron Scooter after the festival and explore the Esplanade and Darwin Waterfront.

Barunga Festival

9 - 12 June 2023

This immersive festival celebrates Aboriginal music, culture, art and sport in the remote community of Barunga - home of the Bagala people. Barunga is located about 80km south-east of Katherine, and the festival is a unique opportunity to visit and engage with an Indigenous community. Held annually in early June, Barunga Festival features a diverse program, from storytelling and bush medicine workshops to spear throwing and football games.

If you want to stay in the community of Barunga (which we recommend doing for the experience), you’ll need to pack your camping gear as you won’t find any other accommodation options. Alternatively, you could stay in Katherine or Mataranka and make the trip in each day.

Tip: While you're in Katherine region, explore what else it has to offer. Check out Nitmiluk Gorge, Leliyn (Edith Falls), or Bitter Springs.

Garma Festival

4 - 7 August

Garma Festival is one of the most significant cultural events in Australia, celebrating the culture and life of the Yolngu people in remote north east Arnhem Land. Hosted by the Yothu Yindi Foundation, the festival's mission is to offer a modern platform for the sharing and showcasing of traditional Yolngu systems and culture, in a Yolngu environment. You can expect a display of traditional miny'tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and storytelling.

Garma Festival is unique because it also works as a platform for conversation about issues affecting Yolngu people and other First Nations communities. Political, business, academic and philanthropic leaders come from all corners to take part in these crucial discussions.

Darwin Aborig inal Art Fair

11 - 13 August 2023

Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) is the only national event of its kind where you can purchase such an extensive range of Aboriginal art. DAAF is a chance for people to connect with artists and ethically purchase from over 70 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art centres.

You’ll find wearable art like clothes, jewellery and material, in addition to paintings, sculptures and textiles - with lots of unique creations in between. DAAF is free to attend and you can also experience material demonstrations, artist talks, workshops and more over the weekend.

Tip: We recommend going to DAAF on the first day it's open (the Friday) to get the best picks.

National Indigenous Music Awards

August - date TBC

Held in Darwin, the NIMAs showcase the very best of Indigenous music in Australia, from emerging artists to established legends. The NIMAs are more than just an awards night; they are testament to the power of music as a tool for cultural expression and storytelling, with performers drawing on both traditional and contemporary influences.

The NIMAS are held annually in August at the Darwin Amphitheatre - one of our favourite venues in Darwin. Sit on the grassy green hill and enjoy the dry season night.

With wide open spaces, a stunning desert backdrop, and a dry season made for outdoor spectating, Darwin and Alice Springs host some of the most thrilling motorsport events in the country. Here's what's on in 2026.

betr Darwin Triple Crown

19 – 21 June | Hidden Valley Raceway, Darwin

The Darwin Triple Crown returns in 2026 with heart-pounding, adrenalin-pumping motorsport action at Hidden Valley Raceway. And this year it's bigger than ever.

For the first time, fans will experience a Friday Supercars race at the Darwin Triple Crown — delivering more racing action with a bold new format: a 100km sprint on Friday, a 200km race on Saturday, and a 200km race on Sunday. Three full days of racing under Territory skies.

The 2026 event also marks Darwin's debut round of the Dunlop Super2 Series Supercars , giving fans even more to watch. It's also the official Indigenous Round of the Supercars Championship, showcasing Indigenous culture and celebrating Larrakia Country.

Red CentreNATS

3 – 6 September | Alice Springs

The 12th annual Red CentreNATS, presented by LMCT+, brings thousands together in Alice Springs for four days of cars, bikes, and culture.

The program is stacked — drag racing, burnouts, motorkhana, and roll racing alongside show and shines. The legendary street parade fills the town centre with hundreds of machines, greeted by cheering crowds.

New for 2026: Dirt Drag Racing comes to the National Transport Hall of Fame, open to all cars and bikes.

Red CentreNATS is also the place to win serious prize money, with over $55K on the line across burnouts, drag racing, and other events. Whether you're entering or just watching, Alice Springs on Father's Day weekend is genuinely worth the trip.

Tatts Finke Desert Race

5 – 8 June | Alice Springs to Aputula (Finke)

The 2026 event marks 50 years since the first 'There and Back' race in 1976, when 56 competitors took on the challenge. Half a century on, it's grown into one of the most extreme off-road races on earth.

The two-day race covers 446km, following the historic Old Ghan Railway route from Alice Springs to the Aboriginal community of Aputula and back, crossing the Finke River and challenging competitors with washouts, creek crossings, corrugations and whoops.

Up to 750 bikes and 200 buggies and trophy trucks compete annually through remote terrain of red dirt, sand, and spinifex. For spectators, the atmosphere around Alice Springs race weekend is electric — and the surrounding Red Centre landscape makes it unlike any other motorsport event in the world.

Something different - Beer Can Regatta & Henley on Todd

Beer Can Regatta - 16 July
This truly unique Top End event takes place annually in Darwin. As the name suggests, the boats in this regatta are made entirely out of empty beer cans. Participants are encouraged to get creative with their designs and decorations, resulting in an impressive display of colourful and quirky vessels. The event also includes a variety of other activities, such as sandcastle building and thong throwing contests. While the main focus is on having fun, the regatta also promotes sustainability by encouraging the reuse of materials that would otherwise go to waste.

Henley on Todd - 19 August

Unlike traditional regattas, this quirky event takes place on the dry sandy creek bed of the Todd River in Alice Springs. The Todd transforms into a makeshift boat arena for the day for contestants to race bottomless boats - you can either make your boat, or make use of the supplies to craft your own on the day and join in on the fun.

4WD camping in the Top End

We've summed up some of our favourite 4WD camping spots in the Top End, where you can escape the crowds and immerse yourself in stunning Territory landscapes.

Butterfly Gorge

Butterfly Gorge Nature Park is a hidden gem in the Douglas Daly region, tucked away at the base of a low sandstone plateau. The gorge is home to thousands of Common Crow Butterflies (hence the name) and other wildlife, and gorgeous terrain and vegetation. Butterfly Gorge has a series of rock pools for you to swim and explore - swim through the main pool to reach the narrow gorges and upper pools. While you can't camp in the park itself, you can camp at the nearby Tjuwaliyn (Douglas) Hot Springs or Douglas River Esplanade Conservation Area.

Depot Creek

Head to Depot Creek to explore one of the Top End’s less visited parks - Judbarra / Gregory National Park, just 2.5 hours south of Darwin. The 4WD tracks to get to Depot Creek from the turn off aren’t for the faint hearted, so you'll need to be prepared and have a decent amount of 4WD experience. Once you reach the gorge, enjoy swimming, rock climbing and connecting with nature. Depot Creek is off the beaten track, so you'll get the chance to escape the crowds and might even have the place to yourself.

Depot Creek is typically open from May/June for the dry season. Check NT Parks before you go.

Gunn Point

You won’t find Gunn Point on the typical tourist trail, but it is a local favourite for beach camping and fishing. Gunn Point is just an hour from Darwin on the Gunn Point Peninsula making it easily accessible (if you have a 4WD). Soak up the picturesque ocean views, watch the sunset and make the most of beachfront camping in the Top End.

You won’t need a permit to visit or camp at Gunn Point, but we do recommend you check out the Gunn Point FAQs to learn about access points, facilities and where to camp.

Coburg Peninsula - Garig Gunak Barlu National Park

Garig Gunak Barlu National Park offers truly remote camping and adventure in the Top End. Located in Arnhem Land on the Coburg Peninsula, this isolated area is beautifully rugged with winding coastlines and diverse ecosystems.

This 5000 square km region is virtually uninhabited, with the traditional owners protecting the parks pristine condition. Garig Gunak Barlu also boasts world class fishing with a huge array of species, alongside other marine life such as turtles, sharks and crocodiles.

You’ll need a permit to camp at the park. We also recommend checking that the roads are open before you go. Typically, access to the park is between May and October.

The Top End Gin Festival is back in 2023 at one of our favourite Darwin locations. Held at the Darwin Ski Club, the festival features distilleries from around the country for gin tastings, masterclasses, cocktails and more.

You can also enjoy a great lineup of Australian music - artists are yet to be announced yet so keep your eye out on socials.

Sip on a gin under the palm trees, watch the sunset and enjoy this unique dry season event.

April in Alice Springs: Parrtjima, Larapinta & more

April is one of our favourite times to visit Alice Springs. As the weather starts to cool down after the summer, the Red Centre starts to come to life with events, festivals and the reopening of hiking trails.

Parrtjima - Festival of light

7 - 16 April

Parrtjima is one of the biggest events on the Alice Springs calendar. This event is the only authentic Aboriginal light festival of its kind, where you can see the world's oldest living culture brought to life through light, art and technology.

The theme for this year is Listening with Heart (Kunturu Kulini), which has been inspired by the artwork surrounding the Uluru Statement. This theme emphasises the importance of coming together, meeting and taking the time to contemplate and reflect in the Red Centre.

Visitors can explore the many light installations, participate in workshops, listen to talks and music performances and watch films. Check out the complete 2023 program .

This event runs over 10 days and is free to the public - all you need to do is register online.

Wide Open Spaces

28 - 30 April

This 3 day festivals celebrates music, art and desert culture on Eastern Arrernte Country.

The music lineup includes a diverse range of artists from an eclectic mix of sub-cultures and inspirations. There's also a jam packed arts, performance and workshop program - featuring cabaret, panel discussions, theme parties, workshops, interactive installations and more.

Wide Open Spaces is held in the Central Desert, 80km east of Mparntwe/Alice Springs at Ross River Resort. The main accommodation option at the festival is camping, but there is also a small number of cabins available at the resort.

This festival is crowned as one of the most unique in Australia, so it's definitely worth adding to the bucket list.

Larapinta opens for the season

April marks the beginning of the season for the famous Larapinta Trail.

This 223km trail traverses the West MacDonnell Ranges, from the Telegraph Station in Alice Springs to Mount Sonder. But don't worry, you don't have to tackle the whole distance - you can choose to do do any of the 12 sections, depending on how long you want to hike for.

April is one the best times to do Larapinta. As Central Australia emerges from the rainy season, water is still in abundance so you can guarantee great swimming in water holes and also have access to plenty of drinking water. The West Macs will also be bursting with colour and life.

You can also expect great weather in April, with milder temperatures in comparison to peak summer and winter. In saying this, the trail is still relatively quiet at this time of year so you can soak up the incredible landscape without the crowds.

The Great Outback Escape

28 - 30 April

The Great Outback Escape isn't your typical cycling tour. This 8 day bike riding holiday is designed to give you the support and luxuries you need to make the most of your time on and off the bike.

By day, ride through the incredible landscapes of West MacDonnell Ranges, Kings Canyon and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Even if you were't planning on being in Alice Springs over this time, consider extending your trip for this spectacular show.

Where to see a croc in Darwin

The Top End is home to one of the biggest populations of both saltwater and freshwater crocs in the world. Male salties average a huge 5m in length and can weigh over 500km - a true apex predator!

Get amongst unique croc experiences in the heart of the Darwin CBD at Crocosaurus Cove. You can easily spend a whole day here with the family, and the Cove is also home to a bunch of other Top End wildlife.

Cage of Death - Keen to swim with an apex predator? The Cage of Death is an adventure seekers dream, and is the only place in Australia that you can dive with a crocodile.

Swimming with crocs (kid friendly) - If the Cage of Death isn't for you, you can cool off in a pool with baby freshies right next door. Don't forget your goggles!

Big Croc Feed Show - Get to know some of the Cove's resident crocs, learn about their feeding habits and how they’ve survived for over 200 million years in the wild.

Gapuru

Gaparu is a secluded camping spot just 65km from Nhulunbuy. Enjoy the incredible freshwater swimming Gapuru offers and soak up the gorgeous East Arnhem landscape.

One of the best things about Gapuru is that the campground allows a maximum of five vehicles each night and all of these vehicles must belong to the same party. So if you’re heading to Arnhem Land, apply for a permit advance and you’re almost guaranteed to get the place all to yourself!

Bawaka & Lonely Beach

If you're looking for a truly off-the-beaten-track destination, the Bawaka homelands are a must-do in Arnhem Land.

The only way to explore this part of Arnhem Land is with Lirrwi Tourism . You'll be picked up from either Nhulunbuy or Yirrkala for the 4WD journey south to Bawaka, which in itself is an awesome experience as you get to traverse remote parts of East Arnhem.

Get an unmatched insight into Yolgnu homeland life, including how Yolgnu people gathered bush foods, traditional remedies and spearfishing/crab hunting.

You'll also visit the iconic Lonely Beach, with a spectacular rocky island surrounded by turquoise waters.

Garig Gunak Barlu National Park

Nestled at the very top of the Northern Territory on the Coburg Peninsula, Garig Gunak Barlu National Park is known for its diverse ecosystems, wildlife and winding coastlines.

This 5000 square km region is virtually uninhabited, with the traditional owners protecting the parks pristine condition.

Garig Gunak Barlu is home to world class fishing, alongside multiple species of marine turtles, dolphins, sharks and crocodiles. We also recommend making a stop at the Black Point Cultural Centre to learn about the rich history of the area. In particular, the trade relationships between Aboriginal people and Macassan traders from Indonesia.

You don't need a permit to visit Garig Gunak Barlu National Park, but you will need a permi t to stay overnight. Access to the park seasonal (May to October) so always check that the roads are open first.

Wanuwuy (Cape Arnhem)

Discover the pristine and untouched peninsula of Wanuwuy on the eastern tip of Arnhem Land. The journey to Wanuwuy is about 50km south of Nhulunbuy and you'll need a 4WD.

Wanuwuy is the perfect example of the journey being just as good as the destination. The route will take you over rocky escarpment, over sand dunes and along pristine stretches of beach.

There are several camping areas along the north-eastern end of the peninsula with picnic tables and fire pits. Enjoy exploring the white sandy beaches, relaxing, watching the sunrise and at the right time of year, you might see turtles nesting.

You will need to apply for a permit before visiting Wanuwuy through the Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation.

The Trail

The trail is an easy 3.5km return trip that follows the creek via all 8 camp sites. You can also follow the trail up to where it links in to the multi-day tabletop track.

Throughout the day you could have hikers passing along the trail coming via your camp - however we didn't see anyone is the 2 days that we were in our spot

The camp Spots

All 8 sites are pretty spectacular! When we arrived there wasn't anyone else in any of the sites so we got to pick which one we liked the most. We chose site 3, which was our favourite due to the huge pool and small waterfall! There was also some shade which was nice during the day. Site 4 was also nice, and sites 7 & 8 were super private (at the very end of the trail).

Site 2 was probably our least favourite and also the least private as the trail walks straight past it (the rest are short side trips off the main trail).

Booking your campsite

The Northern Territory has recently introduced a new reservation system to book campsites. The idea behind this is that campers have the ability to book in advance, and don't run the risk of rocking up to a campground with no availability. It also helps to stop overcrowding, helping you to properly enjoy the serenity of your surroundings.

Note that Walker Creek camping facilities are pretty basic, so come prepared with your own drinking water or means to treat the stream water before drinking. The sites share a couple of drop toilets which may be a little walk from your campsite - you'll need to bring your own loo paper too!

Yurmikmik walks, Northern Territory

Moderate WALK

Distance: 11 kilometres

Kakadu National Park delivers all the wonder it’s renowned for and more during a day’s adventure complete with ample swimming opportunities.

In Kakadu National Park, the Indigenous place names are as beautiful as the scenes themselves. Among the wetlands and escarpments, there are places such as Anbangbang, Yurmikmik and Bukbukluk, and tucked among them is another spot with an even more curious title: Motor Car Falls.

Taking its name from the actions of a tin miner who made the first attempt to drive a vehicle into the area in the 1940s, this beautiful waterfall is the major attraction along the Yurmikmik walks at the southern end of Australia’s largest national park. It’s one of Kakadu’s less-visited sights, but it’s also one of the park’s finest walks and most inviting swimming holes.

For most walkers, Motor Car Falls are an end goal, a cooling reward at the end of a couple of hours of hiking through heat, but the Yurmikmik walks extend beyond the waterfall to Kurrundie Falls, and it’s here that we’re ultimately heading, combining the two waterfalls into one perfect Top End day.

From beside the road to ever-popular Gunlom, the walk sets out funnelling between two low ranges, following the course of Boulder Creek, a dry crease in the earth masquerading as a waterway. Rainbow bee-eaters soar overhead like tiny, colourful jet fighters, and the trail tunnels through speargrass that rises above our heads. The white trunks of the trees stand like glowsticks in the harsh landscape.

Among the low, rocky peaks that crown the range to our right, flashes of greenery reveal the positions of Motor Car Falls and Kurrundie Falls, luring us forward like bait.

For a long time, the trail to Motor Car Falls suitably follows a disused vehicle track, which ends beside an emergency radio post. Here, we turn towards the range, stepping suddenly out of the dry savanna and into lush monsoon forest. Beside a series of pools, we approach the escarpment, finally rock hopping to an enormous boulder hanging over the pool at the base of the falls.

In midwinter, Motor Car Falls are reduced to a trickle, but even with minimal flow the pool is deep, cool and irresistible. The boulder serves as a DIY diving board, and soon we’re joining the handful of other people here leaping into the water.

Ledges along the base of the waterfall provide poolside seats, and there’s a tiny cave notched into the cliffs beside the falls. Swim into it and the sun casts the water into a vibrant green glow (and fish will likely nibble at your toes). On a shadowed cliff along from the cave, hundreds of butterflies roost along the rock, taking off in clouds as I walk beneath them.

After several swims, we return to the junction beside the radio post, turning up the valley, where the trail continues to skim along the foot of the range. The day’s heat and the land’s aridity are suddenly so much more acute after a swim among the monsoon forest. Slender termite mounds spear out of the earth, though they are like scale-models compared to the enormous mounds out beside the nearby Kakadu Highway.

Beside a burnt-out track sign, the trail veers back towards the range, following Kurrundie Creek into another notch in the escarpment. The trail is faint, and it’s a make-your-own puzzle beside or in the creek bed until a final bouldery scramble – and a squeeze through a narrow space between boulders – emerges above the green pool at the base of Kurrundie Falls.

This waterfall pours down more powerfully through a crack in the cliffs. I swim across the pool and scramble into the waterfall, which thunders onto my shoulders as tiny frogs hop about the damp rock walls.

In the late afternoon, after a couple of hours lounging around the pool, we begin the return march to the car park, ducking in once more to Motor Car Falls for a final swim. It’s nearing sunset by the time we approach the car park, prompting a final detour up the slopes to Yurmikmik Lookout, draped across the rocky shoulder of a low hill.

From this vantage point, we look down onto nearby hills armoured in black rock, and back along the range to the green glow of Motor Car Falls and Kurrundie Falls – it’s a view that’s also a mud map of the day.

Everything you need to know about visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges

A trip to Central Australia simply wouldn’t be complete without visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges. We spent several days exploring this region during our 14 Day Red Centre Road Trip and decided to put together a guide to visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges, to help you plan the perfect trip!

About the West MacDonnell Ranges

The West MacDonnell Ranges are a mountain range which lie within the West MacDonnell National Park. Traditionally known as Tjoritja and locally referred to as the West Macs, the park spans over 161km west of Alice Springs. It’s a place of significant cultural importance, with a string of stunning gorges, waterholes and breathtaking views. The West Macs are also home to the famous Larapinta Trail, a multi day hike stretching 231km from Alice Springs to Mount Sonder. On top of all of this, there’s an abundance of native flora and fauna found here too.

Getting to the West MacDonnell Ranges

Most travellers visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges do so via the Larapinta & Namatjira Drives from Alice Springs. Following these roads west from Alice Springs, you’ll find yourself in the West Macs in about 15 minutes. Short unsealed roads shoot off the main roads, leading to some truely magical places. For the most part, these unsealed roads are accessible via 2WD, however some are 4WD access only.

It is of course possible to visit the West Macs from other areas. If travelling from Yulara, you can either drive to Alice Springs and onto the West Macs. Alternatively, take the Lasseter Hwy turning left at Luritja Rd. This will take you to Watarrka National Park and Kings Canyon. From Kings Canyon, continue onto the Mereenie Loop and up to Redbank Gorge. You can then drive along the West Macs from Redbank Gorge to Alice Springs.

*Note: The Mereenie Loop is a 160km stretch of sandy unsealed road, best suited to 4WD vehicles. Read more about driving this road on our 14 Day Red Centre Road Trip blog.

Best places to visit in the West MacDonnell Ranges

There’a a bunch of amazing places worth visiting in the West MacDonnell Ranges. Whilst it’s a popular region to visit on a day trip from Alice Springs, we’d recommend taking a few days to explore the area if you have time. There is just so much to see and do! These are our recommended stops in order if travelling from Alice Springs.

Simpsons Gap

Simpsons Gap is the first place most people stop at when visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges. It’s a truely beautiful place and a great introduction to the West Macs. Referred to as ‘Rungutjirpa’ by the Arrente Aboriginal people, Simpsons Gap is an important spiritual site where several dreaming trails and stories cross.

From Alice Springs, it’s a 24km drive along the Larapinta Drive to reach the Simpsons Gap carpark. From the carpark, it’s a short and easy walk along a well maintained path down to the gap. As you near the end of the path, you’ll be blown away by the beauty of the deep gorge surrounding you. Along with a permanent waterhole, Simpson’s Gap is home to dozens of rare plants, several short walks and a range of native wildlife. If you visit at dusk or dawn, you may even spot a shy Black-footed Rock Wallaby in the area.

We’d recommend allowing 1-2 hours to explore the area here. Access to Simpsons Gap is free and there are also free gas bbq’s, toilets and bins nearby.

Standley Chasm

Located a further 33kms west of the Simpson’s Gap along the Larapinta Drive is Standley Chasm, another beautiful gorge worth visiting in the West MacDonnell Ranges. This place was different to what we expected in some ways, perhaps more beautiful. Aside from visiting the chasm itself, there’s a few short hikes which are worth doing as they offer awesome views of the area. Allow around an hour to visit the chasm and a few more hours is you want to hike to the viewpoints.

Ellery Creek Big Hole

Ellery Creek Big Hole is a ‘must see’ when visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges and was one of our favourite places in the Red Centre. It’s located about 90kms west of Alice Springs, past Standley Chasm.

Of course the gorge and waterhole is the main attraction here and for good reason. It’s absolutely breathtaking. And for this reason, it gets pretty busy with day-trippers hiking, picnicking, swimming and chilling by the banks of the water. So don’t expect to have this tranquil site to yourself during the day. Mornings and evenings are the quietest times to enjoy the Ellery Creek! If you have time, the 2.5km Dolomites Trail is a nice walk around the area and during our visit mid May visit, there was plenty of birdlife around too.

Serpentine Gorge

Located just over 100km drive from Alice Springs, roughly half way between Ellery Creek and Ormiston Gorge is Serpentine Gorge. Although not as impressive as the other gorges in the West Macs, this is still a nice place to visit. From the carpark, it’s an easy 1.3km walk along a dirt track to the gorge. In the hotter months, a quick dip here might be appealing! Our favourite part of Serpentine Gorge was hiking up to the lookout. Not many people made the effort to venture up here but the views from the top were seriously beautiful. There’s a picnic area and pit toilet near the carpark, but no campgrounds or other facilities.

Ochre Pits

If you have time, make a quick stop at the Ochre Pits, just 15kms west of Serpentine Gorge en route to Ormiston Gorge. Ochre is a mineral with various earthy tones, with cultural importance in the Aboriginal community. It has been mined for generations by the local Aboriginal people and has been used for a range of different things in everyday life. We found this an interesting place, but if you’re short on time, you could skip this stop.

Ormiston Gorge

Ormiston Gorge is another ‘must see’ destination when visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges. It’s located 136km drive from Alice Springs and is often the last place people stop on a day trip in the West Macs. The gorge is a short walk from the carpark via a well maintained path and is a great place to spend a day chilling and swimming. It was the busiest gorge we visited and we can totally see why! Much like Ellery Creek, the day trippers disappeared late afternoon during our visit, leaving the gorge completely empty for us to enjoy. The Ghost Gum walk was a highlight here for us, as it offered quieter views through the day and a different perspective of the gorge.

Glen Helen Gorge

Well, Glen Helen Gorge was a little surprise package for us. It’s another stunning waterhole which shouldn’t be missed when visiting the West MacDonnell ranges. Access to the gorge used to be via the Glen Helen Lodge. But since the lodge closed in 2020, many visitors think the gorge is also closed. We can confirm it’s 100% open and accessible via an alternative trail which starts where the road to the lodge is blocked off. Just follow the blue arrows for about 800m, negotiate your way across the partially dry river bed and tall reeds and you’re there. There wasn’t another soul in sight when we visited, just the way we like it!

Finke River 2 Mile

2 Mile was our favourite campsite in the West Macs. It’s a true little slice of bush paradise which in our opinion, is totally worth spending a night at. For those taking their time visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges, camping along the banks of the Finke River offers a peaceful night away from the busy gorges. Mount Sonder Lookout is a few minutes away and is a perfect place to watch the sunrise over the Finke River. We loved our time here so much, we wrote a blog on it.

Redbank Gorge

Towards the end of the West MacDonnell ranges and 157kms west of Alice Springs is Redbank Gorge. Most day trippers don’t make it this far but we are glad that we did! Not only is Redbank Gorge a stunning waterhole, it’s the gateway to section 11 & 12 of the Larapinta Trail and the incredible Mount Sonder. Access to the gorge is 1.2km via a dry riverbed, which requires a reasonable amount of rock hoping and scrambling. Of course it’s worth the effort, especially in the warmer months when taking a dip in the water will cool you down! We visited late afternoon when the gorge was almost entirely shaded which also cooled things right down. If you’re after a bit of sun, we’d recommend visiting earlier in the day. There’s 2 campgrounds here, making it a great place to stay before continuing on your Red Centre journey.

Mount Sonder

Last but not least, we give you Mount Sonder. Our sunrise hike here was seriously beautiful and one of the best things we did whilst visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges. The hike starts from the Redbank Gorge carpark and is in fact section 12 of the Larapinta trail. It’s a tough slog up in parts, but totally worth every drop of sweat. The views from the summit were spectacular as were the views hiking down. You don’t have to do this hike for sunrise, however it’s best to head off early, before it gets too hot.

Accommodation in the West MacDonnell Ranges

Camping is your only choice when it comes to accommodation in the West Macs. Campsites throughout the park range from bush camps with no facilities at all, to campgrounds with hot water shower and free gas bbq’s. Camping fees apply depending on the category of the campground and payments are generally made by cash via an honesty box at each site. More information on fees and facilities can be found via the NT gov website .

Finke River 2 Mile Camping Area and Serpentine Chalet offer free bush camping for those after a more rustic experience.

Tips for visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges

Planning on visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges? Here’s a few extra tips to help you out!

The best time to visit is during the winter months of May-September when the weather is cooler. Having said that, mornings and night can be super chilly often reaching below zero!
Winter is also the peak season and the busiest time to visit. If you want to enjoy the gorges and walks without the crowds, get up early and get there first! You’ll likely see some stunning sunrises too.
Take layers of clothing to keep you warm during the night/early mornings and to offer protection from the sun.
Make sure you pack sunscreen, a hat, sunnies, swimwear and towel.
There’s limited places to charge cameras, phones etc as not all campgrounds have power. If you’re spending a few days visiting the West MacDonnell Ranges, make sure you have the relevant car chargers and adaptors.
Although there are water tanks at most campgrounds, this water is generally untreated and reserved for hikers on the Larapinta Trail who rely on it. Leave this water for them and make sure you take PLENTY of water with you.
Apart from a cafe at Standley Chasm and Ormiston Gorge, there are no shops. You’ll need to stock up on supplies before you arrive, including water and ice.
The nearest fuel stations are in Alice Springs, Hermmansburg and Kings Canyon Resort.
There’s very limited phone and wifi reception in this part of the world. Apart from a few areas, we were completely offline most of the time.
Avoid driving at night. This is the outback and the West MacDonnell Ranges are still remote – remember the lack of phone service if you breakdown. There’s also a lot of wildlife in the are such as camels, brumbies and cattle which are unpredictable, especially at night.
As always, leave no trace. There are limited bins, so take ALL of your rubbish with you.

Kakadu National Park has been home to Aboriginal people for more than 50,000 years.

The traditional owners of Kakadu are Bininj in the north and Mungguy in the south.

Bininj and Mungguy people have adapted and used the land for food, shelter and health. Their 6 seasons have been built from their connection to the land and are marked by changes in the skies, rainfall, plants and animals.

Kudjewk

Monsoon season

December to March ( 24°C – 34°C)

Also known as the ‘tropical summer’, this is when the land really comes to life. During this period of thunderstorms, heavy rain and flooding, you’ll get to experience an explosion of plant and animal life.

Kudjewk’s heat and humidity can deter some people from exploring the Top End at this time of year, but it’s arguably the most spectacular time to see the landscape at its most lush and green.

Magpie geese nest in the wetlands, female Ginga (Estuarine Crocodiles) guard their hatching babies and goannas migrate to trees to seek refuge from flooding ground.

Spear grass grows tall and honeyeaters, lorikeets and bats feast on flowering paperbark trees. Waterfalls are overflowing with fresh water.

Our favourite way to experience Kudjewk in all of its green glory? From the air with a scenic helicopter flight over Kakadu’s most impressive waterfalls and floodplains.

Bangkerreng

‘Knock em down’ storm season

April ( 23°C – 34°C)

Bangkerreng is named after the ferocious ‘knock em down storms’ that rip through the land and flatten all of the spear grass.

Marking the end of the wet season, while flood waters diminish, the land is still green and most plants are still fruiting. Animals are caring for their young and we get a glimpse of clearer skies.

This is an exciting time of year because roads and water holes that have been closed for the wet start to open up for visitors as the rain recedes. Dragonflies also start to come out.

Bangkerreng is during ‘run-off' which is one of the best times of year to catch barramundi as the floodplains drain. Kakadu Fishing Tours run special ‘Run off’ full day fishing tours from March to May, giving you the chance to catch an iconic barra.

Yekke

Cooler (but still humid) season

May to mid-June ( 21°C – 33°C)

In Yekke, the weather starts to cool down and the humidity drops.

Billabongs and wetlands are covered with water lilies and early morning mists hang over the flood plains.

During Yekke, Bininj and Mungguy know that dry winds and Darwin woollybutt are a sign to start patch burning to ‘clean the country’ and encourage new growth.

Yekke’s dryer weather means it’s a great time of year to opt for outdoor experiences. If you’re visiting Kakadu, learning about the culture is a must-do and can make your time in the park all the more special. Wurrkeng

Cold weather season

Mid-June to mid-August ( 17°C – 32°C)

By Territory standards, this is a cold time of year and when humidity is at its lowest. It’s the perfect time for camping and hiking, and a great escape for southerners who are in the middle of their cold winters.

Most creeks stop flowing and floodplains dry out, but many of the main waterholes such as Jim Jim Falls and Maguk remain full and ready for swimming.

Wurrkeng sees an abundance of bird activity on shrinking billabongs, offering a great opportunity for bird watchers and photographers to catch a glimpse of unique Territory species.

NT Bird Specialists run full day and multi day tours throughout Kakadu, taking you to the best spots in the park.

Kurrung

Hot and dry season

Mid-October to late December ( 24°C – 37°C )

Expect hot and dry weather as we say goodbye to the cool Wurrkeng season.

While it’s uncommon to get much rainfall in Kurrung, thunderclouds start to build high in the sky signalling the return of Kunumeleng and humidity creeps in. You can also tell that Kunumeleng is around the corner as white-breased wood swallows arrive in Kakadu.

As popular swimming holes start to dry up, Kurrung is a great time to explore the spectacular Yellow Waters Billabong by boat. Starting at the end of Jim Jim falls, enjoy a cruise along the wetlands and see Kakadu wildlife among the paperbark, pandanus and freshwater mangroves.

Kunumeleng

Pre-monsoon storm season

Darwin

Humidity is building and rains are more frequent, turning the land lush and green once again.

Billabongs fill up and waterbirds spread out as their habitat expands, while Namarnkorl (Barramundi) travel up the rivers to the estuaries to breed.

In preparation for more rain, this is when Bininj and Mungguy would move camp from the flood plains to the stone country where there is more protection from storms.

With most camping grounds closed for the year from the start of Kunumeleng, Coodina Lodge is a great retreat-style accommodation option in the heart of Kakadu. Use Cooinda lodge as your base to explore the park before cooling off in the pool at the end of the day and enjoying a meal at the on-site restaurant.

While Alice Springs Brewing Co is located in one of Australia's most extreme climates, that hasn't stopped them from brewing beer. Expect strong, easy-to-drink beers that are a perfect refresher after a day of exploring the outback.

Since its establishment in 2018, Alice Springs Brewery Co has grown rapidly. After started out with a 50L pilot brewery, the the 500L system was a necessary upgrade.

Hang in the brewery bar and take in all the action or chill out in the beer garden.

The food menu is designed to pair deliciously with beer - think crispy wood fired pizzas and juicy chicken wings.

In the heart of Darwin CBD in 2020, Darwin’s first gin bar was born. Not only is Charlie’s a bar, it’s also a restaurant and a gin distillery.

Charlie’s was founded by Rebecca Bullen, who was inspired to create a gin that uses almost exclusively Territory ingredients. The famous Kakadu Plum is one of the star ingredients. Similarly, the food menu showcases seasonal local produce.

Enjoy a cocktail in the comfort of the chesterfield lounge or relax outside in the alfresco area and look out over beautiful Raintree Park. Charlie’s has a hidden entry, so enter via Austin Lane where the roller door is before taking the lift upstairs.

Hoochery Distillery was built on a farm just outside of Kununurra and has a colourful story to tell. Founder Raymond ‘Spike’ Desert was inspired to build the Hoochery after governments told farmers to diversify. And so, he created Western Australia's oldest continuously operating (legal) still.

Hoochery Distillery is foremost a rum distillery but they also offer other spirits and have an outdoor cafe open year round.

Willing Distillery

In Darwin's unsuspecting industrial area, you can find this family-owned distillery and its cellar door. Willing Distillery produces high quality, traditionally distilled spirits bursting with native Australian flavour. Starting with Gin, Vodka and Whiskey are soon to follow.

This Territory distillery was also the first to use a traditional pot still, single shot distillation process for their Gin.

Moontide Distillery is one of the most isolated distilleries in the world. Moontide uses knowledge of native botanicals across Broome and the Kimberley to curate unique flavours within their spirits.

Moontide gin features botanicals such as Kakadu Plum, White Berry Bush, Tamarind and Mango, as well as using pure monsoonal rainwater in every bottle to capture the essence of the tropics.

One Mile Brewery is where you’ll find some of Darwin’s best craft beer.

Owners Stuart Brown and Brady Bayram began brewing in their Darwin backyard. Stu and Brady were avid home-brewers, experimenting with all different types of beers, ales and stouts before turning their hobby into a business in Winnellie.

This brewery has good beer, a laid back atmosphere and food trucks to keep you well fed. Check it out on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 4pm to 11pm.

Katherine. It's unassuming, raw and a little bit wild. It's a place full of surprises. The dry season (winter) weather is sensational. The land comes alive with wildlife and waterfalls during the tropical summer. The locals are larrikins and laidback.

What can you do in Katherine?

The gem of Katherine is the stunning Nitmiluk Gorge where visitors can enjoy a cruise, canoeing, hiking and mountain bike riding. Locals love Edith Falls which consists of three cascading swimming holes.

Guests to Katherine Outback Experience can learn about life on an outback cattle station through real horse and dog training demonstrations or enjoy a horse ride in the outback. Indigenous cultural and art experiences are plentiful with Top Didj Cultural Experience , Godinymayin Art Gallery and Mimi Arts. Kakadu National Park. There's no other place you'll visit quite like Kakadu. It's unique landscapes and diversity make this Aboriginal-owned World Heritage-listed Park like no other! Landscapes ranging from coastal beaches, floodplains and of course the stone country where you will find magnificent waterfalls.

What can you do in Kakadu?

Kakadu offers a range of activities including boat cruises , scenic flights , camping and hiking. There really is something for everyone and a it's a great place to explore with children.

What are the best things to do in Kakadu?

My most recommended activity in Kakadu is experiencing the waterfalls from the air during the wet season when they're in all their glory. I personally prefer a helicopter with the doors off! Any trip to Kakadu is also not complete without witnessing a sunset from one of the many great sunset lookouts. Our top picks are Ubirr and Nawurlandja.

What’s the best time of year to visit Kakadu?

Kakadu is so diverse that you can visit anytime of year. I always think it's great to visit once in the dry and return again in the wet to see the miraculous difference in the landscapes. Of course, with the different seasons comes different seasonal closures, so it is always best to check if the sites you are hoping to visit are open before you get on the road.

How long should you spend in Kakadu?

Kakadu stretches 200kms North to South, so I always recommend at least a few days to a week to really immerse yourself in all it has to offer.

Best place to stay in Kakadu

There are a number of accommodation options in Kakadu ranging from hotel rooms at The Croc, cabins at the caravan parks or camping in one of the many designated camp grounds throughout the park.

Adventuring El Questro

Meet Karen Hawkes, a Territorian who recently took her teenagers on an adventure holiday to El Questro in the Kimberley. They joined some friends in a 4WD convoy at the end of the wet season to explore El Questro at it's finest.

Where’s your favourite place to go in the Kimberley?

El Questro. This private wilderness park is a cattle station that diversified into tourism. It has a range of accommodation options from the luxury homestead to affordable camping.

What is there to do in El Questro?

There is so much to do and see at El Questro, but the key is to remember to pack your swimsuit and hiking shoes. Visits to Emma Gorge, El Questro Gorge and Amalia Gorge are tough going several hour walks with rocky climbs, but the swim at the end is well worth the effort.

What are the best things to do in El Questro?

At El Questro it's all about getting back to nature. Swimming, fishing, bush walking are the key. There are a number of guided activities, including fishing, history and nature tours. At the right time of the year there are horse riding treks for the whole family. We would also recommend the Chamberlain River Cruise, where you meet the cheeky Archerfish that shoot water at you to entice you to feed them.

What’s the best time of year to visit El Questro?

We visited right at the end of the wet season in 2021, which recorded one of the biggest rain falls in years. We were lucky as the roads had only just opened, but it also meant that the waterfalls were fast flowing and the swimming holes full. If you travel in the wet you need a 4x4 vehicle and need to be comfortable with water crossings.

How long should you spend in the Kimberley?

We spent a week in El Questro before heading back to Darwin, but that was not long enough to venture further than the park itself. I would recommend longer to be able to head to Lake Argyle. The drive from Darwin along the Victoria Highway is actually very pleasant, so we could see ourselves taking another short trip in that direction and exploring more of the region.

Things not to miss

If you're comfortable with four-wheel driving, then taking a trip up to one of the sunset spots is worth the effort. You will have fun on the journey up there, and be rewarded by 360 degree views over the Chamberlain Gorge and Pentecost River.

Weekend trip to Litchfield

Meet Stef. Stef is new to the Territory and has a new found love for exploring the Top End's pristine freshwater swimming spots. On the weekends she jumps in her 4WD with her young kids and partner to explore Litchfield National Park with their camper trailer in tow.

"There's nothing better than getting to explore nature with our kids. It's the best playground they could ask for".

What’s your favourite Territory location?

Litchfield National Park. One of my favourite things about Litchfield is that it’s only 1.5 hours out of Darwin. This makes it really convenient for a day trip if you’re looking to unwind from a busy week but don’t have several days to spare.

What is there to do in Litchfield?

We love teaching our kids about the areas we adventure in, so we’ve done a few different cultural tours in Litchfield to learn more about Indigenous culture and history. Litchfield is dotted with plunge pools, swimming holes and creeks that will keep the kids entertained for hours. It’s also a good opportunity to get the kids walking - a swim at the end is a great incentive.

What are the best things to do in Litchfield?

In the dry season, some of the popular spots like Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole can be packed with people, so I’d definitely recommend the Upper Cascades loop walk where you can swim without the crowds. The walk is moderate to difficult, so you might need to give the kids a hand at times but it’s a fun challenge!

What can’t you leave without doing?

Nothing beats a sunset picnic at the top of the Tjaetaba Falls plunge pool.

What’s the best time of year to visit Litchfield?

Although the dry season is probably the most popular time to visit Litchfield, the end of the wet is pretty impressive as the waterfalls are overflowing and everything is green and alive.

How long should you spend in Litchfield?

2-3 days with young kids gives you plenty of time to explore the park while not rushing too much. What usually works for our family is taking the kids on a long walk in the morning before relaxing and playing in the afternoon.

Best place to stay in Litchfield

Camping, always! It's the only way to experience nature at its best. There are also a few new campgrounds opening up this dry season in Central Valley, so we're excited to test those out.

If you're after something a little more luxury though, Hideaway Litchfield is a good choice. These secluded cabins are a great escape at any time of the year.

A lot of locals don’t usually associate Kakadu with great fishing, but I believe the park has some of the best kept fishing secrets in the world. It’s a place of absolute natural beauty, rich culture and amazing fishing if you take the time to learn how to fish it.

What can you do in Kakadu?

When you’re not fishing, there’s a bunch of other things you can do in Kakadu from swimming and walks to art and culture. If you get a chance, take a scenic flight over the park. This is especially spectacular in the wet season!

What are the best things to do in Kakadu?

You can’t leave without doing the Yellow Waters cruise at Cooinda and a sunrise or sunset walk to the top of Ubirr rock.

Even though I’ve been coming up to the NT since 1999, I’ve only recently discovered Barramundi Gorge (Maguk), so that would have to be my top travel tip. You’ll follow Barramundi Creek to a pristine plunge pool and you can also explore the top pools too with awesome views.

Tips for great fishing in Kakadu?

If you’re planning on trying your luck with fishing in Kakadu too, I’d suggest dropping into a local tackle shop in Darwin before you go and picking up a copy of the land-based fishing book for just a few dollars. Have a chat to the locals about where to fish and also pack some ziplock bags and sachets of instant seasoning so you can cook your fish up as soon as you catch it!

What’s the best time of year to visit Kakadu?

The best time of year for fishing in Kakadu is just after the wet season when the roads start to open up again. This is usually around late April/early May.

How long should you spend in Kakadu?

I’d spend at least 3 days in Kakadu if you really want to explore everything it has to offer. This will give you the chance to learn about the local culture, explore swimming spots and have a fish!

I can’t look past the Cooinda Lodge . It has a big range of accommodation options from campsites through to hotel rooms as well as a great bistro and swimming pool.

Check out the Araluen Art Galley - it has the most fabulous Indigenous art. Megafauna Central is also a must do, showcasing the unique megafauna that roamed Central Australia 8 million years ago. And it's free!

At least a week to give you enough time to explore the East and West MacDonnell Ranges as well as Alice Springs.

The Hilton or Lasseters are great for something flash in Alice Springs, but a hidden gem for a quieter stay is the Vatu Sanctuary. If you're heading out bush, a must is Hale River Homestead.

Make sure to do an astronomy tour at the Earth Sanctuary. The sky at night is a sight you'd never get to see in a city.
